The sector of plant variety protection is experiencing a quiet yet powerful revolution. Far from being niche, it has become one of the most dynamic hubs of global innovation, clearly demonstrated by the latest data published by Wipo and Upov.

An Impressive Momentum:

In 2023, there were 29,070 new PBR filings (+6.6% year-over-year), marking the eighth consecutive year of growth. For comparison, around 15,000 filings were recorded in 2009. By the end of 2023, nearly 195,610 plant varieties were protected, a remarkable increase of +21.3% compared to 2022.

China Leading Plant Innovation:

China has clearly positioned itself as the global driver, accounting for 55.7% of global applications in 2023 (+24.2% over one year). The European office (CPVO), in second place, holds about 10%.
